A first step

Questions you may be asking.

Try a practical action, then explore the activities and support below.

I feel stuck. Where do I start?

Start with one situation you want to handle differently, rather than trying to change everything at once. Write down what is happening, what you can influence and one action you can attempt this week. Set a time to review what happened. If you want a facilitated starting point, Break Free uses a board game and guided discussion to examine a recurring choice and write a seven-day action plan.

How do I stop putting off a conversation I need to have?

Make the first step specific: decide who you need to speak to, what you want to explain and what you need to ask. Draft one opening sentence and choose a suitable time to invite the conversation. Afterwards, note what you learnt and what remains unresolved. Break Free offers a short session for noticing a recurring pattern and choosing a next action; its seven-day planning example shows how a vague intention can become a specific commitment.

02 · What you will do

What you will produce

Use the game and guided debrief to identify a recurring pattern. Write the action you will take, when and where you will try it, and when you will review it.

  1. Play. Take part in CASHFLOW 101, The Game of Life or another board game chosen by the trainer, and notice the choices you make. The game may vary between sessions.
  2. Review. Use the debrief to name a recurring pattern and choose one useful next move.
  3. Plan. Write a seven-day action commitment with a time and place. Attempt it, then record what happened, what you learned and your next step.

During the programme

  • One recurring pattern and a different response to try.
  • A seven-day action commitment with a time, place and review date.

Over the next seven days

  • A short self-review recording the attempt, what happened, what you learned and your next step.

Name the pattern, make a specific commitment and honestly review your attempt.

Starting draft
I keep putting off a difficult conversation.
Review question
Which part am I avoiding? What is one conversation I can prepare this week?
More specific version
By Friday, write the two points I need to discuss and ask for a 15-minute conversation. Review what happened on Sunday.

Try it: write your own starting statement, answer the review question and choose one action you can check afterwards.
